📝 What Is Casino RTP, and Why Can a Bonus Exclude a Game?
Learn what casino RTP measures over the long run, why it cannot predict one session, and how bonus rules may exclude games by RTP or provider.

RTP means “return to player.” It describes the share of total stakes a game is designed to return as prizes over a very large number of plays. A game with a theoretical 96% RTP is designed around roughly $96 returned per $100 staked in aggregate over many plays; it does not promise that one person will get $96 back from a $100 session. The UK Gambling Commission's player explainer makes this distinction for gaming machines: RTP is a long-run average, not a per-play or per-session result.
This educational guide explains checks and terminology. Interfaces, terms, and availability can change; verify primary sources and the live account before acting.
RTP becomes a second kind of question when a deposit bonus is active. Rainbet's deposit promotion terms exclude games with RTP over 97.4% under both of its published welcome-bonus paths. Its 40× Wager Locked path adds provider exclusions: Hacksaw and Nolimit slots. This page separates the probability concept from those offer rules.
What a 96% RTP does—and does not—say
The percentage refers to total stakes returned, not the percentage of spins that win. A game could return prizes on many small wins or on rare larger wins and still have the same theoretical RTP. If a $1 spin loses, the return for that spin is 0%; if it pays $10, the return for that spin is 1,000% of the stake. Neither single result changes what the published long-run percentage means.
For a simplified illustration, consider a game with theoretical 96% RTP and $100,000 in combined stakes across a very large number of plays:
| Quantity | Long-run illustration |
|---|---|
| Total amount staked | $100,000 |
| Theoretical amount returned as prizes at 96% RTP | $96,000 |
| Difference between stakes and theoretical prize return | $4,000 |
This is an illustration of the game's design ratio, not a prediction that actual results will equal those dollars. The realized payout may differ, especially across shorter stretches of play. The UK Gambling Commission notes that normal volatility can make a typical session vary from the average; its RTP guide explicitly warns against expecting a stated RTP on each amount staked. Rainbet's responsible-gambling policy also explains that casino games have a house edge and that losses remain possible.
The simple complement of a 96% RTP is a 4% theoretical house edge in this simplified example. That is a long-run game measure, not a fee taken from each spin and not a way to infer the next result. RTP also does not state how often a win occurs or how large any particular payout will be.
Why would a bonus have a 97.4% RTP cutoff?
The cutoff is an offer condition set by Rainbet, not a general definition of a “good” game. Under its locked-bonus terms, games with RTP over 97.4% are not allowed while the promotion is active. The same terms separately exclude slots by Hacksaw and Nolimit. Under the No Wager Lock terms, Rainbet also excludes games above 97.4% RTP, but that section does not expressly repeat the two provider exclusions. Absence from that section is not proof a game is available for a particular account; live game and promotion rules still need checking.
The threshold says nothing about whether a player will win on a game below it. A 96% RTP game can still lose an entire session. Nor does a game above 97.4% become a guaranteed profit opportunity outside the promotion. The UK regulator's RTP explanation and Rainbet's responsible-gambling policy both make the underlying point: outcomes vary, and the house edge remains.
Worked eligibility examples—not game recommendations
These examples apply only the published rules to hypothetical games. They do not verify a real game's current RTP, provider, availability, or account-specific eligibility.
| Hypothetical game | 40× Wager Locked path | No Wager Lock path | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 97.5% RTP, any provider | Excluded by the published RTP cutoff | Excluded by the published RTP cutoff | 97.5% is over 97.4%. |
| 96% RTP, Hacksaw slot | Excluded by the named provider rule | Not settled by the published no-lock section alone | A below-cutoff RTP does not override a separate provider exclusion. |
| 96% RTP, Nolimit slot | Excluded by the named provider rule | Not settled by the published no-lock section alone | The provider exclusion is stated for the locked path. |
| 96% RTP, other provider | The stated RTP and provider rules do not themselves exclude it | The stated RTP rule does not itself exclude it | Other game, promotion, or account restrictions may still apply. |
Rainbet's terms say “over 97.4%.” A game displayed at exactly 97.4% is not above the written threshold, but a rounded display may not establish the operator's underlying game configuration. The safe editorial conclusion is only that the written RTP cutoff would not exclude a verified value that is exactly 97.4%; other rules may. Do not infer eligibility from a third-party list, a provider's default RTP, or the title of a slot. Source: Rainbet deposit promotion terms.
The locked path has a bet-size rule too
The locked-bonus terms, rechecked on 24 September 2026, state a maximum bet of 2% of the qualifying deposit. A 24 September affiliate reply also refers to 2% and says the maximum bet should still apply, while a live active-promotion screen supplied that day displayed 1% of the amount deposited into the promotion. The conflict is unresolved, and the representative said they had not used the promotion personally, so neither figure should be treated here as confirmed permission to place a particular bet. Check the cap shown in the account and obtain written clarification from Rainbet. The locked promotion is stated to apply to the casino section, and its first-deposit balance carries a 40× wagering requirement. The first-deposit help page illustrates $8,000 in required wagering for a $100 deposit plus $100 match. A separate local wagering-requirements explainer covers that calculation.
The No Wager Lock section of Rainbet's published terms does not state a corresponding numeric max-bet rule. That omission should not be rewritten as “unlimited bets.” It means this page cannot verify a cap for the no-lock path from those terms alone. Account-specific promotion screens and current terms may add conditions. Source: Rainbet deposit promotion terms.
A practical reading checklist
| Reader question | What to verify in the current game and offer information |
|---|---|
| Is the displayed RTP a long-run figure or a session guarantee? | It is a long-run figure; it cannot predict the next spin or a short session. |
| Is the game's specific RTP above 97.4%? | If yes, Rainbet's published welcome-bonus paths exclude it while active. |
| Is the slot by Hacksaw or Nolimit? | The locked path excludes those providers regardless of the game's RTP. The no-lock wording is less explicit. |
| Is the bet within the locked path's limit? | Use the cap shown in the active account and resolve any conflict with the written terms before wagering. |
| Does a game qualify for wagering progress? | Availability and qualifying wagering are related but not necessarily identical. Use current promotion rules; do not assume every bet counts. |
Volatility also shapes the session
The existing guide correctly separated RTP from volatility. Two games can publish the same RTP while distributing outcomes very differently: lower volatility tends to produce smaller, more frequent changes, while higher volatility tends to concentrate more of the return in rarer outcomes. Neither pattern changes a short session into a predictable one.

FAQ
Does 96% RTP mean I will get 96% of my deposit back?
No. RTP is a theoretical long-run ratio across many wagers. A single session can end far above or below that average.
Is RTP the chance of winning one spin?
No. It does not state hit frequency or predict the next result. Volatility and prize distribution are separate characteristics.
Why can a bonus exclude a high-RTP game?
A promotion may set its own eligibility rule to restrict games above a threshold. That rule does not turn a lower-RTP game into a recommendation.
Does an available game always count toward wagering?
No. Availability and wagering contribution are separate. Check the current promotion terms and the account display.
